Host Bathroom MVP

posted on April 11, 2019 by Charity

Last year we unexpectedly received a package in the mail from Juka Innovations, the makers of TubShroom* and its sister products, SinkShroom* and ShowerShroom*. Surprised by the unsolicited outreach and never ones to give our recommendation to any product lightly, we decided to put it through the wringer at our own Airbnb to see how well it performed under real-world conditions.

The clawfoot tub and shower combination on the main floor of our home sees a lot of use. Over the past year, we’ve hosted guests nearly 250 nights and most of those nights involved someone enjoying a long, hot shower.

In the past we would receive a kind word from one of our guests periodically — something like “hey — just wanted to let you know that the water in the tub seems to be draining slowly.” Sound familiar?

At this point, we were faced with one of two options:

  1. bust out the bottle of highly toxic, horrible-for-the-environment, kill-everything blue drain cleaner of death; or
  2. grab our trusty drain snake* and extract the hair from the drain in a very manual, goop-filled manner

One of the yuckier tasks we’ve had as a short-term rental host is removing the hair and gunk left behind by previous guests but now TubShroom has honestly solved that problem for us.

It’s simple to use; just rely on it instead of a tub stopper, and it will catch loose hair before it becomes a nasty, messy problem in the drain.

In between every guest, we simply remove the TubShroom and easily separate the chrome top, giving it a quick cleaning to prevent water stains. Next, using a piece of toilet paper or a reusable rag, we remove all of the head and body hair trapped in the TubShroom and toss it out. A thorough cleaning of the flexible lower portion of the device to prevent mildew build-up, then replace the chrome lid and we’re back in business!

We would definitely recommend this hair catching system if you run a short-term rental or if you just happen to have hair! It will undoubtedly save you time and money on expensive drain fixes, help minimize negative environmental impact and prevent unhappy guests languishing in ankle-deep shower water!

Apart from the aforementioned one-time, free TubShroom and SinkShroom, we received no additional compensation from Juka Innovations — we just really recommend the product!

Portland’s Short-Term Rental (ASTR) Guidelines

The City of Portland and Airbnb worked very hard this year to pass a set of guidelines that would allow hosts to operate legally in the city. Prior to 2014, it was technically illegal in Portland to offer rooms for rent for less than 30 days. Hosts doing so risked being shut down by a […]

Pandemic Pivot: Time for a Change of Pace

This past year was a pandemic roller coaster, filled with a few high-highs and a heaping helping of low-lows. In February 2020 we were optimistic for a busy tourist season. We’d been streamlining processes and were planning for a busy summer. That’s when we first heard about an illness called the coronavirus. It seemed kind […]
